How the rally unfolded
Blomqvist led for most of the rally, with brief interruptions from Mikkola, Röhrl and Vatanen. Vatanen won 11 stages in the 205 T16 and led briefly after stage 18, but the Peugeot’s engine failed on stage 31.
Röhrl retired with electrical failure on stage 44 and Mouton’s engine failed on stage 14. Henri Toivonen crashed his 037. Achim Warmbold finished ninth in a Mazda RX-7 — a rare top-ten result for the rotary-engined car.
The decisive moment
Blomqvist regained the lead on stage 19 and was never headed again; Vatanen’s retirement removed the only real threat.
