Miki Biasion

Massimo ‘Miki’ Biasion (born 7 January 1958, Bassano del Grappa) was Lancia’s great Italian hope. For all but one rally of his career he was partnered by co-driver Tiziano Siviero.

Episode 6 — Lancia Delta S4 & Henri Toivonen

Lancia’s next generation, waiting in the wings.

First steps

Biasion and Tiziano Siviero, both from Bassano del Grappa, started together in 1979 and stayed together for the rest of Biasion’s world championship career. Their first top-ten finish came on the 1982 Rallye Sanremo: eighth in a Conrero-prepared Opel Ascona 400.

From the European to the World Championship

In 1983 Biasion won both the Italian and the European championships in a Lancia 037, and finished fifth on his home world championship round in Sanremo. That earned him a place in the Lancia Martini world championship team:

  • 1984 – sixth on the Monte Carlo Rally, fourth in Portugal, second in Corsica and third on the Sanremo.
  • 1985 – second in Portugal and sixth on the Sanremo in an ageing 037, as Peugeot’s 205 dominated.

1983 European champion in the 037, winner in Argentina in 1986 in the Delta S4, and later a two-time Group A world champion.

1986

In 1986 he drove the Delta S4. After Toivonen’s death he became the team’s number two behind Alén. He finished second on the Acropolis and third in New Zealand, and won Rally Argentina, his first world championship victory, ahead of Alén.

After Group B

In the Group A era Biasion became world champion in 1988 and 1989 with the Delta HF 4WD and Integrale. He later drove for Ford.

European and national championships

In 1983 Biasion and Tiziano Siviero, in a Jolly Club Lancia 037, won seven European rounds: the Costa Brava, Alicante, the Costa Smeralda, the 4 Regioni, Ypres, Madeira and San Marino. In 1985 he won three more (Costa Brava, Costa Blanca and Halkidiki). See the European and Italian championship pages.
