Key entries

The leading seeded crews (start numbers 1–8):

Stig Blomqvist won his home rally ahead of Michèle Mouton, the first of five wins on his way to the 1984 drivers’ title.

How the rally unfolded

Per Eklund, driving a private Clarion-backed Quattro, led four of the first five stages and won 14 stages to Blomqvist’s 13. But Blomqvist took the lead on stage 6 and kept it to the finish. Mouton came through to second; Eklund finished third, 16 minutes back.

Lancia again stayed away from the snow. The best non-Audi was Mats Jonsson in an Opel Ascona 400, with Lars-Erik Torph fifth in a Group A Ascona. The Swedish Rally counted only for the drivers’ championship.

The decisive moment

Blomqvist took the lead on stage 6 and was never headed again.
