Key entries

The leading seeded crews (start numbers 1–8):

Juha Kankkunen won his first world championship rally, on his first Safari, with Björn Waldegård making it a Toyota one-two.

How the rally unfolded

Kankkunen and Fred Gallagher, entered by Westlands Motors, beat Waldegård by 34 minutes. Mike Kirkland was third for Nissan, Rauno Aaltonen fourth for Opel.

The favourites fell away: Vatanen (head gasket), Mikkola, Blomqvist, Alén and Bettega all retired with mechanical failures, and Saby crashed. Timo Salonen was seventh — useful points for the eventual champion.

The decisive moment

Toyota’s preparation for Africa paid off again. Kankkunen became the first driver to win the Safari at his first attempt.
