Porsche

Ferdinand Piëch (17 April 1937 – 25 August 2019) was born in Vienna, the son of Louise Porsche. After studying mechanical engineering at ETH Zurich he joined Porsche in 1963, led its development department from 1965 and became technical director in 1971. He was closely involved with the Porsche 906 and the 917.

Audi and the quattro

Piëch joined Audi in August 1972 as head of special projects, became head of technical development by 1975, deputy chairman of the board in 1983 and chairman in 1988. He initiated the development of a car for the World Rally Championship, which led to the Audi Quattro: the idea of permanent four-wheel drive in a performance car came from his engineers (see Walter Treser and Jörg Bensinger), but it was Piëch who made the project happen.

Volkswagen

In 1993 he became chairman of the Volkswagen board of management and later chairman of its supervisory board until 2015, building the group into a collection of brands including Bentley, Bugatti and Lamborghini.

Piëch’s exact title during the quattro’s development is given differently in different sources; this page follows English Wikipedia (head of technical development by 1975).
