How the rally unfolded
Blomqvist led the first eleven stages; Mikkola took over on stage 12 and won by 2 minutes 34 seconds. Mouton was third, and Mehta — in a fourth works Quattro — finished fourth. Lancia sent two cars: Markku Alén was fifth, while Vudafieri crashed out.
Argentina had taken Brazil’s place on the calendar. The win strengthened Mikkola’s position at the top of the drivers’ standings.
The decisive moment
Mikkola’s move into the lead on stage 12 decided the rally; Audi’s top-four sweep was its strongest team result of the year.
